Aikido, developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), is a modern Japanese martial discipline. It is based on classical Japanese martial arts, particularly various forms of jujitsu (primarily Daito ryu aiki-jujitsu). Aikido’s movements however, are at the same time fundamentally based on the movements and principles of the Japanese sword, and staff. It is the physical embodiment of a philosophy. The discipline of aikido has been translanted as "the art of peace".

While Aikido is a very effective system of self-defense, it emphasizes the spirit of harmony, cooperation and mutual respect. It is sometimes called moving Zen or meditation. Aikido is defensive, and uses mostly throws and pins. It emphasizes blending with one or more attackers and redirecting and neutralizing the force attacks. Some techniques are spectacular, sending partners flying through the air. Others are subtle and immobilize an aggressor using almost no apparent force. True Aikido movements are not rough, and most appear to be quite smooth and graceful. Aikido movements are most effective when minimal strength is used. Physically, Aikido movements come from the center or hips. With proper training a surprising amount of power can be developed in a relatively short amount of time by almost anyone.

Because great muscular strength is not required, Aikido can be practiced by men and women of almost any age. It helps to be in reasonably good physical shape, but you do not need to be in excellent aerobic or muscular shape to practice aikido. As people practice, they achieve increased strength, flexibility and balance.

As seen above, the basic Aikido "uniform" is the same as judo’s or karate’s, but to start you only need loose-fitting clothing such as a long sleeve T-shirt and sweat pants.

Students who are interested may become eligible to test for certificates leading to the rank of black belt.

Eastern Shore Aikido is affiliated with Capital Aikikai which is also affiliated with the Aikido World Headquarters, located at Hombu Dojo in Tokyo

Classes are available in Maryland's Mid-Shore area (Easton and Cambridge). If there is a keen desire to study Aikido we will try to make it possible for anyone with patience, a sense of humor, an open mind and an open heart to study Aikido. We believe that we have developed a small but very effective program for learning the basic principles that underly aikido.

Currently classes in Easton are on Tuesdays and Thursday (at 5:30), and Sundays (at 10:00am). Classes last at least two hours.

Special classes for individuals or groups interested in Aikido or centering, balance, effective movement are available by arrangement as well.
